About Paisley Natural History Society Illustrated Talks
Evening talks are held in the Wynd Centre, Paisley, on the first Thursday of every month from September to April at 7.30pm. Talks last about 1 hour covering a variety of topics from birds and bats to fungi and fossils. Members also have the opportunity to share their wildlife sightings and news.
Anyone is welcome to come along and if they enjoy the talk they can become a member on the night.
Tea/coffee and biscuits are available after the talk for which a small donation is appreciated. Disposable cups are provided but we encourage members to bring their own reusable cups if they are happy to do so.
7th December 2023: Jenny’s Well Nature Reserve
Matthew Smith (Chairperson, Friends of Jenny’s Well)
Matthew will provide an introduction to this Local Nature Reserve in Paisley and some of the wildlife to be found there. In addition, he will describe the accidental journey he and the Friends group are on, which started with a bit of casual litter picking and bramble snipping, but grew into a multi-faceted and long-term environmental and community endeavour!
11th January 2024: Wildlife Photography
Kirsten Ferguson
Kirsten will share her love of photographing wildlife. As a passionate amateur wildlife photographer Kirsten firmly believes that it’s vital not to disturb the balance in nature, and to leave the habitat as though you had never been there.
1st February 2024: Botanical recording in Renfrewshire
Michael Philip (BSBI Recorder vc99 Dunbartonshire and Joint Recorder vc77 Lanarkshire)
In addition to his roles as BSBI Recorder, Michael is co-organiser of the vc76 Botany Network for Renfrewshire. The development of the new Botany Network in Renfrewshire since 2021 has led to increased activity in recording the county’s wild plants. Through many photographs, maps and stories, Michael will illustrate progress – as well as inviting participation and offering training and mentorship. Never has it been more important to know our wild plants, and to monitor changes in the health and diversity of our flora.
7th March 2024: Scotland: An underwater journey
Mark Kirkland
Mark Kirkland is a mental health social worker who in his spare time immerses himself in the seas, lochs and rivers around Scotland. He has had a lifelong fascination with the sea and after learning to dive in 2011 soon picked up a camera to fulfil an equally strong creative impulse. His photos have appears in national and international media outlets and he has won a number of national and international competitions including the portrait category of the British Wildlife Photography Awards in 2019 and being named British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2021.
